In my late teens, I read the magazine *Ordfront* and couldn't get enough of Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore. I viewed the United States as the source of all evil in the world—capitalist and imperialist greed that stirred the spirit of resistance among the world's oppressed peoples.
This worldview was directly inherited from the postwar left, on both sides of the Iron Curtain. In my mind, the attackers had no independent ideas or goals. They were merely reacting to U.S. foreign policy. They were bit players in my narrative about the United States.
That was 25 years ago, and our entire world changed. Shortly after the terrorist attacks, bombings against the Taliban in Afghanistan began. The Taliban had harbored al–Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, who were behind the attacks. Subsequently, an international coalition carried out a joint occupation of Afghanistan.
By the time the U.S. finally withdrew from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, the Taliban had already regained power.

Neither the Islamism behind the attacks nor the worldview that led me to excuse them has disappeared. What unites them is not a shared vision of the future, but a shared image of the enemy.

Perhaps this is because many in the West never really perceived it as anything other than a local variant of the anti–imperialism that was so central to the postwar Western left. Islamism is viewed as a sort of preliminary stage of anti–capitalist enlightenment, where the intentions are sound but the solution has not yet reached a higher stage.
But Islamism is not the Left's anti–imperialism in religious disguise. This is evident from bin Laden's own statements.
Something that today can be regarded as little more than a footnote in history is that bin Laden described Australia, an ally of the United States, as "crusaders" in a statement. This was because, in 1999, Australia had sent peacekeeping troops to East Timor, which had recently voted for independence from Indonesia. The mission was UN–authorized and Australian–led, and was followed by a UN–led force.
This historical aside was, however, symbolically important to bin Laden. Islam must always expand, he believed; it must never compromise or, worse still, accept that infidels or atheists be allowed to rule over Muslims. Admittedly, East Timor was not Muslim—nearly the entire population is Catholic—but the region had been ruled by predominantly Muslim Indonesia. The East Timorese people's right to self–determination carried little weight against the notion of Muslim territory.
Bin Laden's view was clear: Any presence of infidels on Muslim soil (regardless of who actually lives there)—whether in the form of U.S. military bases in Saudi Arabia or UN–mandated peacekeeping forces in East Timor—was regarded as a defeat in an ongoing holy war. In this context, the UN partition plan for the British Mandate of Palestine, which resulted in the founding of Israel in 1948, was just one in a series of unacceptable setbacks that needed to be rectified.
In his declaration of war in August 1996, bin Laden described the American presence in Saudi Arabia as an occupation of "the land of the two holy sites"—the territory surrounding Mecca and Medina. The terrorism to which the West was subjected was the logical consequence of our continued insistence on exploitation and our support for monarchs and dictators in the Middle East.
This explains why parts of the European left were at times openly enthusiastic about Islamist militias such as Hezbollah, or showed a striking lack of interest in Islamist oppression in Iran. What they themselves stood for mattered less than who they were fighting.
At various times, certain elements within the left in the Middle East, Europe, and North America had positioned themselves strangely close to the revolutionary Islamist movements. Not because they necessarily shared any deeper ideological ties—quite the opposite, in fact—but because they shared a common enemy: the imperialist West.
This explains why students in both Tehran and Paris greeted the Islamist revolution in Iran in 1979 with such enthusiasm. It represented liberation from U.S.–backed despotism. But the only thing the communists were liberated from was their own lives, when, shortly after the revolution, they began to be executed by the Islamist regime.
The shameful enthusiasm I felt regarding the terrorist attacks in the U.S. also persists in the West.
